Highland Beach History

Although Highland Beach was incorporated in 1949, the city has a storied history with many different inhabitants and settlers that had different goals that dates back to the 1200's! Between the years 1200 and 1300, the land of Highland Beach was inhabited by the Caloosa Tribe. The Caloosa Tribe was known for harvesting and planting crops of fruit and sweet potatoes among the bountiful fish and wild animals and waters of the land. Flash forward to a few hundred years to 1500, when pirates and buccaneers took over the area. The pirates sought refuge from storms on the land and had easy access to steal gold and other treasures and remnants from Old Spain. As time moved forward, the Seminole Indians came to inhabit the land in the 1800's. In 1896, Henry Flagler completed the East Coast Railway which made efficient transportation to and from Highland Beach a reality. In the early 1900's, Japanese immigrants made their way to the west of the Intracoastal Waterway naming their neighborhood Yamato and mainly became a farming and agriculture area known for pineapples!

In 1949, Highland Beach was officially incorporated with 21 votes. There were two main reasons behind the urge to incorporate. The first reason was to preserve the land's fresh water supply. With salt accumulating in wells, residents wanted the ability to start collecting funds for a water plant to protect the fresh water supply. The second reason was due to rumors of a trailer camp inhabiting the area in the near future. Residents did not approve of the plans and wanted the ability to officially approve or disapprove of residential settlements on the land. Highland Beach's name was given due to the fact that the land rose over 20 feet above high tide, higher than other portions in the area. Fun fact, in 1945, land was around $45 a foot and considered worthless due to the swamp lands and mangroves. In 1950, Highland Beach land values were around $125/foot. Today, Highland Beach real estate can be in excess of $1500/foot!
